What to sort before an end-of-tenancy rubbish collection

Moving boxes and a travel bag in a furnished living room with a clear floor

Sort what is leaving with you, what stays in the property and what needs taking away before booking collection.

Moving day can leave several very different piles in one room. A packed box, an unwanted chair and a landlord’s cabinet may all be beside the door, but they should not all go into the same collection.

Start with the inventory, not the rubbish bags

Find the inventory: the list of furniture, fittings and other items supplied with the property. Compare it with what is in each room, using the original photographs if you have them. Scottish Government guidance on getting ready to move out includes checking the inventory. Do this before you describe a room as ready to clear.

Wardrobe and chest of drawers left in place with personal bags kept separately

Leave the landlord’s furniture, appliances and fittings in place unless their removal has been clearly agreed. An item being old, damaged or unused does not make it yours to throw away. If ownership is unclear, send the landlord or letting agent a description and photograph. Get a clear answer about that particular item and keep the reply with your moving notes.

In a shared home, speak to the other tenants before adding anything from a communal cupboard or room. An apparently forgotten box may still belong to someone. Our guide to agreeing a shared house clearout explains how to record decisions. Keep anything awaiting an answer away from the collection load rather than asking the collection team to guess.

Separate your moving boxes from unwanted belongings

Keep the belongings going to your next home in one clearly separate part of the room. Use secure labels that you and your helpers understand, particularly when boxes look alike. Put keys, tenancy papers, medicines, chargers and anything needed on moving day somewhere you can find it without opening the rubbish bags. Do not leave these loose beside the load.

Books and folded clothing in a bag beside a wooden stool

Next, decide which unwanted items are still useful. A sound stool, clean books or spare clothing might be passed on rather than disposed of. Zero Waste Scotland’s donating advice recommends checking what the organisation accepts first. Arrange the handover while you still have access, and keep those items indoors and separate until someone has taken them.

Arrange reuse early enough to change the plan if someone cannot collect. If an item becomes part of the rubbish instead, tell the collection company before adding it. That extra chair or cabinet can change the amount and the quote. Do not leave donations in a communal entrance or assume the next tenant will want them because they are still usable.

Tied rubbish bags and dismantled shelving kept inside a room

List the rubbish and keep unusual items apart

Make a list of the agreed waste, room by room, and then combine it into one collection list. Describe what is inside bags as well as how many there are. Note bulky pieces separately, including whether they are still assembled. A few bags of clothing and packaging are a different job from furniture, electrical items or materials left after building work.

Old lamp, closed paint tin and batteries kept separately on a counter

Keep batteries, electrical items, paint and unidentified containers out of ordinary mixed rubbish. Describe them separately and agree suitable disposal rather than hiding them inside bags. Do not disconnect fitted appliances or remove fixed cupboards to make a collection possible. If this work is needed, get the landlord’s agreement and arrange the right help before anything is disturbed.

For a trip with your own household waste, read North Lanarkshire Council’s recycling-centre rules. Bring photo ID and proof of address; vans and single-axle trailers need an appointment. These household sites exclude commercial waste. A landlord or contractor should not assume waste from their business can use the same household route.

Agree access before the keys change hands

Find out the agreed checkout time and key-return arrangements, then plan the collection around access you can actually provide. Tell us if the property is an upstairs flat, has a shared entrance or is some distance from a suitable vehicle position. Include narrow doors, entry systems and parking restrictions in the description so the work can be discussed properly.

Our Cumbernauld rubbish-removal service includes lifting and loading for the agreed collection. Explain where the waste will be waiting and ask what moving it from there involves. A skip is a different choice: you load the accepted waste yourself and need an agreed place for the container. The landlord’s permission to remove belongings does not settle where a skip can stand.

If you have already returned the keys, arrange access with the landlord or agent before confirming collection. Do not assume the collection team can collect keys, wait for an agent or enter an empty property without an agreed arrangement. Keep stairs, fire exits and shared doors clear. Leave the waste in the agreed place rather than moving it onto the pavement overnight.

Make the final collection check before handover

Before the collection starts, compare the waiting items with your list. Identify the exact bags and furniture to be taken, and point out anything nearby that must stay. If someone else is meeting the collection team, give them the current list and the ownership decisions. A message saying clear everything is too vague when moving boxes and landlord belongings are still nearby.

Call back before collection if the amount, waste type, access or handover timing changes. Agree what the revised quote includes rather than assuming the original arrangement covers extra work. Keep your booking details and collection paperwork. SEPA’s householder waste guidance says waste must only be passed to an authorised person; check the relevant registration before handing it over.

Afterwards, check the rooms and cupboards again for your remaining possessions and follow the agreed checkout process. Rubbish collection is not the same as end-of-tenancy cleaning or a property inspection, and it does not guarantee you will get your deposit back. If you are also sorting a garage, use our garage clearout guide and include only your agreed waste in this collection.

A useful collection plan makes three things clear: whose belongings can go, exactly what waste is included and how it will leave the property. Settle those points while you can still speak to everyone involved and arrange access. It makes the final day easier for you, your helpers and the people collecting the rubbish.
